Brooklyn, NY 11229- A Cultural Treasure Trove

Brooklyn New York is a diverse metropolitan area with a vibrant local culture. The borough is a cultural and historical treasure trove and its residents are active participants in the city's art, music, and literary life. Its many neighborhoods have distinctive architecture, cuisines and "vibes" and are largely self-contained. Each neighborhood has its own local government, and the borough is represented by 16 members of the City Council. The borough is also served by a District Attorney who is directly elected by the people.

Its history has shaped American literature, cinema and dance. Walt Whitman's classic poem Crossing Brooklyn Ferry captures the sense of discovery that was part of Brooklyn's appeal to nineteenth century immigrants. Harlem Renaissance playwright Eulalie Spence's plays Fool's Errand and Brighton Beach Memoir are set in Brooklyn. The renowned Brooklyn Academy of Music has had a long association with the performing arts. The borough is also home to the second largest public art collection in the country in the Brooklyn Museum.

Today's Brooklyn is a multi-cultural and ethnically diverse region with an estimated population of 36 million, which is more than one in every seven Americans. Brooklyn is made up of more than twenty-seven distinct communities ranging from the urban core in Williamsburg and Greenpoint to the suburban hamlets of Flatbush and Park Slope to the resurgent Coney Island. Each community has its own cultural institutions, restaurants, churches and synagogues.

In terms of ethnic diversity, Brooklyn is the largest community in the United States where more than half of the residents identify as non-white. African American and Latino are the second and third most common ethnicities in the borough. Other significant racial groups include Asians (Indian, Pakistani and Filipino), Chinese Americans and Korean Americans. There is a large concentration of Jewish Americans in Park Slope and Ditmas Park, with smaller observant and non-observant communities in Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, and Brighton Beach. Brooklyn is also home to a large number of Russian Americans, with the most in any U.S. city outside of Chicago.

Brooklyn's political climate is dominated by the Democratic Party and most public offices are held by Democrats. There are some pockets of Republican influence, especially in Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights. The city is served by a district attorney, who is the chief prosecutor of criminal cases. The Brooklyn Borough President is an elected position, and the borough's sixteen City Council members are all Democrats.

The borough has a wide range of cultural and civic organizations, including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Brooklyn is also known for its music, with a great tradition of jazz and hip hop and many pioneering musicians and bands coming from the borough. It is also home to the famed Labor Day celebration, a massive event that draws between one and three million visitors. There is also a thriving scene for contemporary writers, including Norman Mailer, Jhumpa Lahiri, Don DeLillo and Siri Hustvet, as well as poets and writers of Puerto Rican descent who are referred to as "nuyoricans." The Brooklyn Historical Society has an enormous collection of materials relating to Brooklyn's 400-year past.
